Outline permission has been given to plans for 870 new homes on the outskirts of Peterborough.

Developers Taylor Wimpey and Calco 101 Ltd said as well as homes, it would build a new primary school, playing field and community centre on the site near Newborough Road in Paston.

Plans were first submitted to Peterborough City Council in February 2019 and will form part of a development known as the Norwood Urban Extension, earmarked for 2,000 homes in total.

The outline application was approved by city council planners on Wednesday, subject to a number of conditions that must be met before any building can commence.

The proposal was initially approved by a planning committee in 2021 despite concerns from council officers and nearby parish councils, including some uncertainty and confusion about Section 106 funding and a £2m shortfall for the school.

However, outline permission - with some conditions - has now been granted.

Conditions set out by the council included further details on the appearance, landscaping, layout and scale of the development, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The development is initially limited to the occupation of 200 homes until further highway plans are put forward.
