Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has won the Club World Cup more times than any other manager. And in fact, he has guided his side to victory every time he has participated in the competition.

Manchester City youngster James McAtee says the main reason for choosing the European U21 Championship with England over the Club World Cup was "game time".

McAtee, 22, itted his importance to Lee Carsley's Young Lions squad was one of the decisive factors, as well as the chance to play at an international tournament.

Asked if his club were ive of his decision, McAtee said: "Yeah, I just had a little conversation. It wasn't a long one - it was just a little one of what I wanted to do and it was easy as that.

"The main thing was obviously game time and maybe my importance to this group [England Under-21s].

"I've never had an international tournament before, so I wanted to come here."

McAtee has been named as captain by boss Lee Carsley, with England defending their title.

England U21s kick off their campaign against Czech Republic on Tuesday at 20:00 BST.

Manchester City fan and journalist Jack Gaughan spoke to BBC Radio Manchester on new attacking g Rayan Cherki.

"Really, really exciting player I think," Gaughan said.

"There's not a lot of players in Europe, nor a lot of players signed over the past few years, who have got a full fanbase going: 'I can't wait to see him play.'

"He's got a maverick ability to him. He plays off the cuff in a way that you don't see in the Premier League any more.

"That's what makes it a standout g and we seem to have got him relatively cheap as well. The rebuild is going on at a pace quicker than I thought."

Manchester City have completed the 55m euros (£46.3m) of Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan.

The 26-year-old has arrived on a five-year contract and is the type of balanced midfielder City lacked last season.

The Dutchman scored 15 goals in 54 matches for Milan last term. It was the best goalscoring season of Reijnders' career, with the 26-year-old hitting double figures for the first time.

But the former AZ Alkmaar man, who made his senior debut for PEC Zwolle in 2018, is far more than just goals.

Capable of playing deep or high in midfield, Reijnders' appeal to a coach like Pep Guardiola is clear.

The midfielder is capable of taking the ball in tight areas and is adept at beating the press, either through his ing or ball-carrying.

With Rodri returning from injury towards the end of last season, Reijnders could either play alongside the Spaniard or in a more advanced role.

But the main benefit he brings is giving Guardiola greater options in midfield.

It is two gs in two days for Manchester City and, according to Opta, they are two impressive ones at that.

Rayan Cherki led all players aged 21 or under for both chances created (75) and expected assists (11.7) in Europe's big five leagues in 2024-25.

Meanwhile, Tijjani Reijnders made more es breaking the opposition's defensive line than any other player in Serie A in 2024-25.

Rivals Manchester City are second highest out of Premier League clubs and fifth overall with 179.5m, with Liverpool (166.7m) and Chelsea (152.9m) just behind.

The question being asked in the lead up to the Club World Cup was how seriously teams would be taking the expanded competition.

Manchester City have emphatically answered that question by bolstering a wounded squad that should now go far in the competition in the United States.

With Kevin de Bruyne departing and a hole left in attacking midfield, City were eyeing up Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz but decided not to pursue a deal owing to the excessive cost of the g.

Instead, they have boosted the side with the gs of midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, wonderkid Rayan Cherki and left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri for a total of around £108m - which is less than the reported 150m euros (£127m) asking price Liverpool are reportedly set to pay for Wirtz.

All three, plus new goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, are available for selection for the Club World Cup with City facing Moroccan side Wydad AC in Philadelphia next Wednesday.

French football journalist Loic Tanzi says new Manchester City fans will see "something big" from new g Rayan Cherki under Pep Guardiola.

Cherki's move to City was confirmed on Tuesday and the 21-year-old will be eligible to play in the Club World Cup.

"People will go to the stadium to see a player like him because when he touches the ball it can become crazy during the games," Tanzi told BBC World Service.

"It's going to be interesting for him because he's played three years now in Lyon. He's just 21 years old and it's a big step for him in his career. Under Pep Guardiola, we can see something big. He's not a top player for now, but I think he can become a top player."

Some creative players - such as Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish - have taken time to adapt to Guardiola's style of play and, while Tanzi does believe Cherki may not adjust immediately, he does believe the international will very quickly.

"He's the kind of player who needs time to adapt to a new environment, to a new coach - and he will need time to just understand what Pep Guardiola needs from him," Tanzi added.

"But I think he will just need, I don't know - one month, two months. He is a really clever player and a really clever guy.

"He signed to Manchester City because he knows Guardiola wants to do something really specific with him, and I think he will succeed in the end."

New Manchester City g Rayan Cherki says it is "very special" to be ing the club as he looks to make "next step" in his career.

The 21-year-old's move from Lyon was confirmed on Tuesday, ing on a five-year deal for an initial fee of £30.45m.

He becomes City's second g in two days, with coach Pep Guardiola having brought in Algeria left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves for £31m on Monday. Both are available for the Club World Cup.

"This is a dream for me. Honestly, to be ing a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special," Cherki told club media.

"I have worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep and his backroom staff.

"Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace.

"I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future.

"I can't wait to show City fans what I can do."

City's director of football Hugo Viana added: "He's a player our scouts have watched for a long time, and we have all been impressed with his skill and creativity. I am convinced our fans will be excited to see him play.

"I really believe he can become a world-class player with our and direction."

Rayan Cherki is only the latest talent fresh off the Lyon production line, but he may be the best yet.

He ed Lyon at the age of seven from AS Saint-Priest and, aged 16 years and 140 days, became their youngest goalscorer in January 2020.

Before that, in November 2019, a Champions League debut came against Zenit, while he also helped reach the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championships in 2023.

Cherki has just enjoyed a breakout campaign in Ligue 1, providing 11 assists, 22 big chances - the most in the league - 13 through-balls and 48 successful dribbles.

A return of 12 goals is by far the best of his short career, but it is his work and understanding of the game off the ball that has arguably improved the most this term.

French football expert Julien Laurens, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Euro Leagues podcast, said: "He has been incredible this season. Since he was 16 - even before that - the talent is there, left foot or right foot.

"A player at this level who takes corners with each foot depending on which side of the corner it is, to be an inswinger every time is just incredible.

"He is one of the greatest technicians in Europe right now."

Of the 44 shots he took with his feet in Ligue 1 last season, 22 came with the left and 22 with the right.

Cherki's growing reputation was only enhanced by Thursday's stunning international debut on Thursday against Spain, when he sparked 's comeback from 5-1 down.

And Laurens certainly isn't Cherki's only irer.

legend Thierry Henry has previously said he has "never seen a player in history who dribbles as quickly as him", while Lyon's captain Alexandre Lacazette described him as "special".

Cherki, also part of the squad that finished runners-up at the 2024 Olympics, scored in both legs for Lyon against Manchester United in a Europa League quarter-final defeat in 2024-25.

Speaking to BBC Sport in April about him, Lyon's former Arsenal player Ainsley Maitland-Niles said: "He is the best natural talent I've ever seen. An absolute master, a wizard with the ball.

"He is taking chances, assists and dragging us up the pitch by taking people on and nutmegging them - he is a genius."
